SOMONAUK, IL – Two people were taken to the hospital following a collision involving a deer in Somonauk on Saturday, WIFR reports.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, a 37-year-old man was driving on Chicago Road when he encountered a deer. He swerved out of traffic to avoid hitting it, and ended up crashing into a culvert.

The driver, identified as Luis Torres, and his passenger, 44-year-old Esmeralda Alcazar, suffered unspecified injuries.

EMS crews transported Torres and Alcazar to Valley West Hospital for treatment.

Deputies confirmed Alcazar did not wear a seatbelt, while Torres appeared to.

It’s not immediately clear whether intoxication or speeding were contributing factors.
